She wasn’t showing off anything, but it came quite naturally to her in a very cute way. She would ask me to run errands, virtually depending on me for everything… just like my mother would have told me to.

In fact, not just Leelaji, gradually the others too followed suit. I would complain to Shyamji (Shyam Benegal) about how everyone was making me run errands. He would laugh and say that it was good for my onscreen role.

For this film, Leelaji got some of her most beautiful dresses which she used to wear in her younger days. Anita Kanwar and some others wore it for the film. It was really nice of her to lend those dresses.

She was a very soft and gentle lady, but quite childlike as well. I still remember how she created such a ruckus when she lost her lipstick during the shoot… almost like a child, who could not find her precious toy. She was very particular about her make-up and would get the kit from France. Hence, perhaps, she was all the more aggrieved. Finally, Shyamji requested Soni Razdan, who was also part of the cast, to give her lipstick to Leelaji as it was almost identical.

Leelaji was very beautiful and I particularly remember her having very thick, lovely hair.

At that point, she used to be quite disturbed over her troubled relationship with poet Dom Moraes, her husband, and often confided in us. So, Shyamji had told Moraes not to come till the end of the shoot as his presence would disturb her.”

Judicial Magistrate No 27 Shilpa Sameer directed the Karni Nagar police station in the city to register an FIR against the six including Sawant for alleged breach of copyright by lifting the concept of Swayamvar from the portal of a Pink City-based ’struggling’ writer Gaurav Tiwari.

Besides Sawant and Kishan the FIR is to be lodged against Manging Director of NDTV Imagine Gaurav Gandhi, the Executive Director of the show ‘Rakhee Ka Swayamvar’ and two others for their participation in the programme.

In his complaint filed under section 156 (3), Tiwari alleged that his concept of marriages through swayamvar was his intellectual property and copyrighted in the year 2008 itself but the TV channel had stolen the idea and concept from his portal Swayamvar.Com and started the show.

The court directed the police to register an FIR in connection with the complaint and investigate it.

Study co-author Linda Waite, the Lucy Flower Professor of Sociology and director of the Center on Aging at the University of Chicago, along with colleagues, examined the link between marriage and health.

They observed that divorce or widowhood could take its toll on the health of middle-aged and older people.

Waite found that remarriage appeared to lessen the impact caused by a broken marriage, and those who chose to stay single after the wedlock displayed consistently worse health than those who tied the knot again.

She said: “We argue that losing a marriage through divorce or widowhood is extremely stressful and that a high-stress period takes a toll on health. Think of health as money in the bank. Think of a marriage as a mechanism for ’saving’ or adding to health. Think of divorce as a period of very high expenditures.”

The research took four key aspects of midlife health into consideration, namely chronic conditions, mobility limitations, self-rated health and depressive symptoms.

The experts, after looking at data from the Health and Retirement Study, found that marital instability, caused by factors like divorce or spousal loss, often left detrimental impact on health affecting all four areas.

Stress-management specialist Debbie Mandel said: “While the saying goes, ‘Better to have loved and lost,’ multiple divorces create multiple prolonged stressful conditions and undermine personal empowerment – far worse than never marrying. A good marriage is like making deposits in your health savings account for midlife and the golden years.”

The study will be published in the September issue of the Journal of Health and Social Behavior.

That for you ladies and gentlemen is Dia Mirza, who touched down in the city to scorch the ramp as showstopper for a fashion event.
Even as she sips her tea, Dia, rattles off saying that she has been to the city so many times that she has lost count. Proud of her Bengali connect through her mom and mamima, the actor says, “Whenever my mom and I want to have a secret conversation, we do so in Bengali only to find out each time that there is a Bengali present near us.”

Keen to put her Bengali connect to good use, Dia speaks out, “I’ve always very candidly confessed that I’d love to do an aesthetic Bengali venture. However, the closest, I’ve come to working with directors from Bengal are Pradeep Sarkar and Shoojit Sircar.” Are directors listening?

But Dia listens intently before answering what it is like to sashay down the ramp. “When the spotlight is on you, you feel special.” With the fashion weeks nearing, one wonders if she will be the showstopper for any designer. “It depends on the kind of association you share with the designer. If I’m free, I’ll do it. But being a showstopper isn’t as important as the movie Fashion made it out to be,” Dia jokes tongue firmly in cheek.

Talking of movies, it’s been sometime since this beautiful belle sizzled onscreen. “Well, that’s because all this time, I was working on six films and travelling all over,” she reasons. With a full kitty, the audience can hope to catch Dia in various avatars apart from her sweet, girl-next-door kind of roles so far.

“Most people cast keeping the actor’s persona in mind. But as an actor, it is essential to transform into any person onscreen. And the characters that I’ve essayed so far are of intelligent women,” Dia points out.

But hasn’t she ever been offered a character with dark shades to it? Dia answers in the affirmative clarifying that there dwells a dark side in all of us. “I’ve had such offers but the project didn’t excite me much,” says Dia continuing that she doesn’t have dark shades in real life though she can be assertive. “I’m largely a nice person. People sometimes do try to take advantage of my nice disposition. But that’s when the assertion comes in. And sometimes, I let people get away without having them realise that I’m already aware of their intentions. I don’t believe in confrontations with those who don’t matter to me. I’d rather reserve them for people I love and trust,” her petite exterior belies her headstrong interior.

Perhaps, it is this self- confidence that leads her to admit that insecurity is largely prevalent in the industry. But she is “NOT insecure”. Dia believes in competing with herself. At a time when the industry is flooded with fresh faces, Dia confesses, “There has to be something special that has made me last here. Experience is my strongest arsenal.”

Happy with the way her career is shaping up, one wonders when the actor plans to take the marriage vows. “I am very settled,” Dia signs off before she shoots off to take centrestage at the press conference.

Singh was admitted to the hospital earlier this month. Amitabh’s family — wife Jaya, son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya — had been by Singh’s side in Singapore for many days. Now, Aishwarya and Abhishek are back in India to shoot for Mani Ratnam’s “Ravana”.
