Astrology is a subject with a lot of depth. Traditionally the Sri Lankan’s (mainly the Buddhists) had been placing a lot of faith in Astrology. Though no one knows the real beginnings of Astrology, this is a subject and knowledge which had been passed on from generation to generation. During the ancient times, this subject was masterminded by the most accepted persons in the village such as teachers, Buddhist monks, ayurvedic doctors etc,. There also had been dedicated experts on this subject and the word commonly used on them was “Gurunnaanse”, meaning, well learned.
This subject is based on Astronomy. It is believed that planetary changes do have an affect on the day to day livelihood of different individuals, nations, countries and people. A Gurunnaanse is an astrologer who has the expertise and knowledge in predicting the future. This is done through a complex series of calculations based on ones date, year and time of birth.

Such auspicious times are commonly used when a child is being fed rice for the first time, in the first instance a child is taught the Sinhalese alphabet, when a child attends school on the first day, when a girl child reaches puberty, building a house, all key aspects of ones marriage, when it comes to cultural events like the Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebrations, lighting the stove for the first time in the new year, conducting the first transaction with ones elders in the new year, partaking in food prepared auspiciously, for looking at the moon for the first time in the new year as well as bathing for the first time for the new year. Though the reasons for referring one’s horoscope and looking up auspicious times is a belief instilled to us from tradition, it had been quickly adapted to modern lifestyles as with auspicious times being referred to when departing for an interview, venturing in to a new business and building new office buildings. However true to tradition, ones horoscope is also the basis for instigating the required remedies when one is very ill or when a person is experiencing a series of unfortunate events. The associated rituals as prescribed by the astrologer may include religious rituals as well as remedies based on mysticism. In a nutshell Astrology is used in a cross section of activities in our daily lives.
