Nandan Nilekani, co-chair of Infosys to Head Unique ID Authority

NEW DELHI — India’s federal Cabinet said Thursday it has appointed Nandan Nilekani as the chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India.

The authority will help implement a scheme to assign a unique identification number to every Indian. It will also own and operate the database and maintain it, the government said in a statement.

Mr. Nilekani will have the rank of a Cabinet minister, the statement said.

Mr. Nilekani, who is the co-chairman and board member of Infosys Technologies Ltd., will resign from both the posts, the company said in a separate statement.
